How to build a LOW MAINTENANCE timber decking base
It’s finally time to start building our decking! We’ve been delayed so much by the weather but we’re finally ploughing on with this project. As we’re building this on a North facing wall in the North East of England we’re really thinking about long term maintenance on this one. I really want a timber deck and I’m fairly confident this will have a life span of at least 20 years. Possibly more. Today we’re building the base then in part 2 we’ll finish everything off and talk more about finishes, wood treatment etc. Enjoy!

Can someone in the building trade or with a little bit of experience tell me if I can use this stability post method to strengthen my timber frame floor in my house?? I’m currently renovating my 1930s house and will be installing under floor heating throughout the whole of my downstairs which will have self leveling compound over the top. The issue I have is my timber frame floor has quite a bit of movement especially when the kids are jumping around and I don’t want to crack, damage the underfloor heating or the self leveling compound.. if someone could answer my question I’d really appreciate it. Please only reply if you have experience, no offence intended. I am in the trade (plumbing and heating engineer) so I like to think I know what I’m doing but just need a little bit of advice. Thank you 😊
3:52, Jesus, that paint job is shambolic!
I've used all screws and the torx works the best. They are also easy to get out when you need to take board back off.
Could you use a 50mm to 40mm solvent weld reducer instead of the rubber in the soild stack fitting?
No.
The moral practice is no more, from gov to handyman.
The thing you don’t mention when comparing the cost of new vs old houses is the location. Older houses are generally closer to the main town and cost more in comparison because of that. New builds are generally built in a stripped out field way out of town meaning if you don’t drive you’re usually stuck. As someone who owns an older property close to the town the convenience for me is well worth it.
Some of the phillips screws work with square. Sometimes I just pull out the square drive bit because they drive the phillips screw better than the phillips bit.
Just once, I’d like to see a video where the soil is like the boulder-city in every garden I’ve ever had!
Of just left over building debris!
😊Great video,But i fined Decking is over rated Most people dont look after it and when winter comes it become a death trap slip & Sliding all over the place
I hate wooden batons
Another great video 👍 what mix did you use for the concrete?
If you are looking for a cheaper framing gun, lots of people seem to swear by the Senco SGT90 gas gun, apparently it's very rugged and reliable despite being much cheaper than the Paslode. But for a battery gun, everyone seems to like the Hikoki, lots of recommendations and I've never seen a single bad review. Dean Doherty is very positive about both, and he's a man who knows tools inside out!
Hi, how high should curtain be to the ceiling I see you left a gap where the light goes through. Should there be a gap?
Thanks for a great video. Super useful and straightforward. Bulb replaced.
The situation in 11:06 I have never ever seen happen, even with the cheapest Torx bits and Torx screws. This footage is alien to me.
Torx screws stay on the bit better than any other type of interface. I do however avoid Chinese-made screws and only have German or Taiwanese torx screws. The very reason I went with Torx is because the screws remain attached to the bits, so I can maneuver them wherever I need when building.
Lovely job mate, you and the wife do a cracking job regardless what you're tackling. I must say though, I quite liked the original river pebbles with the plant pots. I would have been tempted putting in some nice decorative slabs to make a patio seating area for some patio furniture, but thats just me. No hate though, geat effort again
In regards to the particle count stability, that is to be expected - assuming that your stove has proper air draw and does not eject gases into the room when you open the door to tend the fire. Any particulates will go up the chimney. To find out if your stove is adding a significant amount to the outdoor count, you would have to do your measurement using the flue exhaust. However, since you are getting replacement air from outdoors, the indoor count might go up - depending on how much higher the PM count is outdoors. Your dinky little fireplace would be worthless for full house heating, but such stoves are nice for a little supplemental heat.
torx is superior no question
Hi what colour wood dye did you use?
There should be zero faults. This shouldn't just be expected. New build quality in the UK is trash. Nobody gives a toss about anything anymore.
The Corefix info sheet says the maximum distance between the plasterboard wall surface and the solid wall is 45mm. Mine is 50mm - do you know how I can create a strong fixing? (Without going to the bolt)
Nice job 👍
Carbon dioxide is plant food.
Fantastically objective video. I'm on a similar estate in the South and we have some similar issues to those you described. The unfinished roads are grating on me too. We do have a great community though.
Had many builders out for our double extension, took 5 years to find a builder and was by word of mouth, couldn’t care less if he swears, calls me mate, whatever, so long as he turns up and is doing a good job who cares, let them get on with it, near the end of the build, only pay in cash, am I paying vat, hell no it’s expensive enough
Crisp, useful how-to - thanks!
Your are true magician my dear friend
Just watching you use the dpc and rubber pads under the posts and thought if when you still had wet concrete you sunk a few say 10x10mm batons sloping away from the centre,on removal of these batons you would create a channel for the water to drain away to the edge of the pads, thus preserving the base of the posts, what do you think ?.
I’m 40 years old & I gonna rebuild our homes.
LOVE IT!
I recently purchased the Mafell MT55cc track saw and the Makita VC4210L dust extractor. The dust extractor hose locks onto the saw very securely.
Tidy, clean and precise. As usual!
We use square drive, or Robertson almost exclusively here in new Zealand.
Land goes up in value, buildings are eventually worthless and are demolished.
Great video guys! Just subbed.
Houses are built cheaply but have become expensive to buy. Something doesn't add up.
Fantastic Title for this video.
When we sold our house the buyer had their own building inspector come to crawl all over to certify it. Couple of small issues we didn't even know about because the code had changed in the past couple of years, all else just fine. Point is - the prospective buyer hired their own home inspector, who would have advised them about the probable cost to fix any faults, and buyer's mortgage lender would have insisted on a commensurate price reduction. Never let the builder or seller try to tell you it isn't worth getting your own independent inspector in prior to buying.
with sketch up, can you do a video on how to use it for basic projects?
No, no and again no. I have seen the hassle that friends and acquaintances have had with new builds, I would never buy one. If you buy a new car you would not expect to have a snagging list for the garage to fix. House builders are just throwing up rubbish, dodgy electrics, dodgy plumbing. Not for me.
I had similar issues when planning mine, double extension with gable end, 2 bedrooms upstairs over full open plan kitchen, had quotes from 72k-160k, it’s near impossible to find good trades, and when you do they don’t want the work, luckily we found the right builder, 80k fully completed, decorated, new 40kw baxi, underfloor heating etc, kitchen on top, roughly 16k, extras 4k total 100k finished
Brilliant video. You make everything look so easy. Your explanations are very detailed for anyone who wants to attempt the project. Have followed the entire house Reno and love all your videos. 😊
Amazing renovation. Congratulations 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🇦🇺🇦🇺🦘🦘🦘🦘👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Trying to answer your questions regarding electrics, Metal back boxes don't require a separate earth as long it has fixed lug, its earthed through the front plate screws. The ring fault may have been caused by the electrical tester, if he tested at the consumer unit, they have to remove/replace conductors out of mcb to test continuity, which probably had passed the tests, only to fail when the cables were reinstalled into mcb. A conscientious sparky might do a quick tug on conductors to check connections are sound.
Just curious for myself, where is the deck level in relationship to the DPC level of the house?
Thank you so much for this. Worth subscribing after watching a few of your extension building videos. ❤ Keep up the good work 👏
Silly question perhaps, but why is there an extra, long empty compartment outside the far right of the decking. Is it just to cover the posts? But it seems integral to the base rather than for aesthetics. Thanks. _amazing work and explanation by the way. Subscribed and liked.
I love the fact that you and your missus get on with the work together when you can or take turns no wonder your home is lovely with such a partnership. I told another couple here on YT about what you have done and maybe you could advise them 'Laura Melhuish - Sprague' Oliver and Laura have redone their own Victorian and wanting to do an extension they want to hire a builder to do it and sure could use your advice on what to expect. I love your decking very simple and not over done I wish another couple here on YT would hire you to redo theirs 'The Sawalha - Adderley's' but that would also be up to them to ask you. Maybe some storage could be built later for storage of whatever you use on this decking :) Everything you did made perfect sense to me would do exactly the same if I were to build one :)
